Flask took eight years to reach version 1.0. SQLite has been in active development since 2000 and still gets meaningful improvements. The Linux kernel is over three decades old and arguably getting better with age. Meanwhile, the average VC-backed startup is expected to show traction in 18 months or explain why not.
There's a growing disconnect between how long good software actually takes to build and how long we expect it to take. The pressure to ship fast isn't inherently wrong — but it creates a culture where patience is seen as a lack of ambition, and where the projects that endure get dismissed as "slow" during the years they're quietly getting things right.
The Myth of the Overnight Success
Almost every "overnight success" in software has a long backstory. React was used internally at Facebook for over a year before it was open-sourced. Rust spent seven years in development before reaching 1.0. PostgreSQL started as a research project in 1986 and didn't become the go-to production database until the 2010s — nearly 30 years of quiet, steady improvement.
What looks like sudden emergence is usually the result of compounding improvements that cross a visibility threshold. The software was getting better the whole time. People just weren't paying attention until it got good enough to be undeniable.
Armin Ronacher, the creator of Flask, wrote about this directly. Flask started as an April Fools' joke in 2010. It became a serious project almost by accident. Years of incremental work — fixing edge cases, improving documentation, rethinking APIs — turned it into one of the most popular Python web frameworks. None of those years were wasted. Why Software Has an Irreducible Time Component
Some problems can't be solved faster by adding more people or working harder. Fred Brooks identified this in 1975 with The Mythical Man-Month, and the core insight hasn't changed: certain aspects of software development are sequential, not parallelizable.
- Understanding the problem domain. You can't fully understand a problem space until you've lived in it for a while. The first version of any software encodes your initial assumptions. - API design and stability. Good APIs emerge from usage. You can't design a perfect API in a vacuum — you need real users hitting real edge cases. Libraries that rush to 1.0 often regret their early design decisions for years.
- Edge cases and hardening. The first 80% of a feature takes 20% of the time. The remaining edge cases, error handling, and platform quirks take the other 80%. This ratio isn't laziness — it's the fundamental nature of making software reliable.
- Community and ecosystem. A tool isn't truly useful until it has documentation, tutorials, plugins, and a community that answers questions. This ecosystem can't be manufactured; it grows organically over time.
The Damage of Artificial Urgency
Move fast and break things was a reasonable motto for a social network trying to find product-market fit. It's a terrible philosophy for infrastructure, developer tools, databases, or anything that other people's systems depend on. When you rush foundational software, the breakage compounds.
I've watched several promising open source projects implode because they tried to grow faster than their foundations could support. The pattern is predictable: a project gets popular, the maintainers feel pressure to ship features quickly, quality drops, contributors burn out, and users migrate to something more stable. The irony is that slowing down would have gotten them further.
The projects that last aren't the ones that shipped the fastest. They're the ones that made good decisions early enough that they didn't have to rewrite everything later.
Technical debt isn't just about messy code. It's about decisions made under time pressure that constrain future possibilities. Every shortcut you take to ship faster is a tax on every future change. Some shortcuts are worth taking — but you should take them deliberately, not because someone arbitrarily decided the deadline is next Tuesday.
What Patience Looks Like in Practice
Patience in software development doesn't mean moving slowly for the sake of it. It means being deliberate about what you build and honest about how long things take. A few patterns I've seen work well:
- Ship early, but commit slowly. Release your software to users quickly so you get feedback, but be very conservative about what you commit to as a stable API. Use 0.x versioning generously. Make it clear that things might change.
- Say no to features. Every feature you add is a feature you maintain forever. The best projects are opinionated about their scope. SQLite explicitly lists things it will never do — and that discipline is why it's the most deployed database in the world.
- Invest in fundamentals. Documentation, testing, error messages, performance — these aren't glamorous, but they compound. A well-documented project with a solid test suite can move faster in year three than a poorly documented one can in year one.
- Protect maintainer energy. Burnout is the number one killer of open source projects. Sustainable pace matters more than sprint velocity. A maintainer who works 20 focused hours a week for five years ships more than one who works 80 hours a week for six months and then disappears.
The Startup Speed Trap
Startups face a legitimate tension: they need to move fast to survive, but moving too fast creates fragile systems that become a liability as they scale. The companies that navigate this well tend to distinguish between two types of speed.
Speed of iteration — how quickly you can test ideas, get user feedback, and change direction. This should be maximized. Short cycles, rapid prototyping, willingness to throw things away.
Speed of commitment — how quickly you lock in architectural decisions, public APIs, and data models. This should be minimized. Keep things reversible as long as possible. The longer you can defer irreversible decisions, the more information you'll have when you finally make them.
The mistake most startups make is conflating these two. They commit to architectures as fast as they iterate on features, and then spend the next two years paying the tax on premature decisions.
Learning from Projects That Endured
The software projects we rely on most heavily share a common trait: they were all considered "slow" at some point. PostgreSQL was the boring choice while MySQL was the fast-and-loose option. Python was "too slow" while Perl was the pragmatic choice. Git took years to become usable by normal humans.
What these projects had was time — time to make mistakes, learn from them, and build something solid. They weren't trying to be everything to everyone in year one. They were trying to be excellent at their core purpose, and they were willing to let that excellence take however long it needed.
The next time you're frustrated that a project is "taking too long," consider that the things you rely on most — your operating system, your database, your language runtime, your version control — all took longer than anyone expected. And that's precisely why they work.
Some things just take time. The best response isn't to fight that reality — it's to build systems, teams, and expectations that account for it.
